Redcurrant Jonkheer Van Tets Fruit Bush
Redcurrant 'Jonkheer Van Tets' is a highly regarded, early-fruiting Dutch variety of redcurrant, prized for its generous crops of large, bright red berries with a pleasantly sharp, juicy flavour. One of the earliest redcurrant cultivars to ripen, it is a reliable and vigorous grower that produces heavy yields year after year, making it a fantastic choice for kitchen gardens, allotments and fruit borders.
This self-fertile variety means you only need one plant to produce fruit, though planting alongside other redcurrant varieties can help improve yields further. The attractive strings of glistening red berries are perfect for jams, jellies, sauces, desserts and juicing. In spring, the plant produces small, nectar-rich flowers that are a valuable early food source for pollinators.
Supplied as a hardy, outdoor garden-ready plant in a 2 litre pot, this redcurrant bush is well-established and ready to be planted directly into your garden or into a larger container.
Key Features:
- Early-fruiting variety producing heavy crops of large, bright red berries
- Self-fertile – only one plant needed for fruit production
- Hardy and reliable, suitable for UK gardens
- Ideal for jams, jellies, sauces, desserts and fresh eating
- Attractive spring blossom supports pollinators
- Suitable for garden borders, fruit gardens, allotments and larger containers
- Supplied as an established plant in a 2 litre pot, garden ready
Planting and Care:
Plant in a sheltered position in full sun to partial shade in moist, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Redcurrants fruit on old wood, so prune in late winter by removing any dead, damaged or crossing branches and shortening sideshoots to two or three buds. Mulch annually with well-rotted compost and feed in early spring with a general-purpose fertiliser. Water regularly during dry spells, especially when fruit is forming. Netting may be required to protect ripening fruit from birds.
